Growing up, Ryuji wasn't all that social with others and kept pretty much to himself. Though he does remember playing with the kids around his age for a brief time. However, being the chairman of the Omi's son he had a bit of a complicated childhood. As soon as parents got wind of this, as well as even teachers, everyone either avoided him or just generally treated him differently. He hadn't found it easy to form bonds with others, but the situation made it far worse for him.
Regardless, he never let this get him down. Spending his time with Nishitani, he certainly picked up some of his habits and became quite a troublemaker. In fact, Nishitani encouraged him to steal pants, because of course he did. Even if it was an odd way of handling the situation, it was a kind gesture and definitely got the message across. With the kids his age not being able to talk to him, he still cared about them and bullied the high schoolers who bullied them right back.
This was how he met Majima, by trying to steal his pants. Though unsuccessful, the fight was rather close for Ryuji being 12.
When Nishitani died, Ryuji definitely didn't know how to handle it. Having never really been in such a situation, he didn't understand it at first. As the years went on, it effected him more as it made more sense to him. Nishitani was something of a father figure to him, when his own father wasn't present due to responsibilities.

Pre - Kiwami 2

In his late twenties, he got in a fight with his dad and ended up walking out. Stealing a bike from some guy, he decided it was a good time to travel.
